Bug Tussel History

Steve Schneider, former Manitowoc County dairy farmer and Cellcom Executive for ten years, developed Bug Tussel Wireless in 2003. Steve was distressed by the lack of attention that rural areas received from cellular providers. He developed the vision and mission to align with the desire to provide service in rural markets with as little as 2 to 5 households per square mile. This economic model was to provide internet service in rural areas where larger carriers chose not to provide service or could not provide service from an economic or company objective standpoint.

Who is Buford J. Tussel?

How does a Wireless company compete in the ever-changing world of technology? Schneider, CEO and President of Hilbert Communications does it with a little help from a friend named Buford.

Bug Tussel Wireless, a subsidiary of Hilbert Communications, believes in delivering high speed internet options to rural areas providing an even playing field for all interned users despite where they live.

Whether you work from home, your home is downtown, or you are manning the family farm, Steve Schneider believes you should stay connected without compromising speed or quality of service.

While building a network to serve rural areas, Mr. Schneider began developing the idea of serving customers in a little different way than a traditional brick and mortar store. He wants customers to get the same feeling and ongoing service as some of the most successful rural insurance companies provide. Instead of making the customer come to him, he envisioned his team going directly to the customer, Their time, their space, their dime. He knew in developing the brand that using an icon can be extremely impactful and would help put a face to the name Bug Tussel.

Enter Buford J. Tussel, the orange Bug. Similar strategy has been used successfully by companies like Kellogg, Jack in the Box and Aflac. Steve Schneider believes that people identify with images and personalities. Bug Tussel Wireless, with the help of a branding agency, created Bug Tussel’s mascot/icon, Buford J. Tussel. Buford is the spokes bug and helps to spark interest, make customers smile, attend community events and to assist in delivering the corporate vision and mission. Buford can’t be everywhere at all times which is why Bug Tussel Wireless hires Business Development Managers who live in or near the coverage areas they service, Customer’s can contact Bug Tussel Wireless through any one of the Business Development Managers or Customer Service. A Bug Tussel representative will go to the customers location, conduct a signal check and in some cases, do the install the same day.
